Job Summary

Waste Management NZ is currently seeking a qualified Welder to join its Christchurch Branch. The successful applicant will help maintain and repair a large fleet of over 100 municipal, commercial, and landfill trucks across the Canterbury region. This is a hands-on technical position where you’ll work with a highly skilled maintenance team ensuring that all fleet assets operate safely and efficiently.

This is an ideal opportunity for a trade-qualified welder who thrives in a busy workshop environment and enjoys the challenge of precision metalwork and heavy vehicle repairs.

Key Responsibilities

As a Welder at Waste Management NZ, you’ll be responsible for:

  1. Performing MIG and TIG welding on unit frames, bodies, and metal parts.
  2. Repairing cracks, breaks, and worn components on trucks and units.
  3. Fabricating custom parts, panels, and reinforcements when required.
  4. Coordinating with supervisors to plan and schedule maintenance work.
  5. Assisting with general vehicle maintenance tasks when needed.
  6. Maintaining accurate records and job logs for all work performed.
  7. Ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards at all times.
  8. Managing job orders using the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  9. Requisitioning necessary repair parts and consumables.
  10. Conducting daily tool and equipment checks to maintain service readiness.

Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 4).
  • Previous experience in automotive or heavy vehicle welding preferred.
  • Proficiency in using Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • A Class 4 driver’s licence is advantageous (or willingness to obtain).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and welding symbols.
  • Strong knowledge of MIG and TIG welding processes.
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and commitment to safety standards.
