Job Summary

The Welder role at WM New Zealand’s Christchurch Branch is a critical part of maintaining the company’s fleet and infrastructure. You’ll be responsible for the welding, fabrication, and maintenance of trucks and associated equipment used across the Christchurch Municipal, Commercial, and Canterbury Landfill & Energy operations.

This position requires hands-on technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail. You will be involved in both fabrication and repair work, ensuring that all vehicles meet safety and performance standards. The role is ideal for candidates with a passion for welding and a desire to work in a sustainable, team-oriented environment.

Key Responsibilities

As a Welder at Waste Management New Zealand, your duties include:

  1. Performing MIG and TIG welding on unit frames, truck bodies, and various components.
  2. Repairing cracks, breaks, and general wear on truck and unit parts.
  3. Fabricating custom parts, panels, and reinforcements when needed.
  4. Collaborating with supervisors to schedule and prioritize vehicle maintenance.
  5. Assisting mechanics with general vehicle maintenance tasks.
  6. Maintaining accurate records using the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  7. Ensuring all welding work meets safety and quality control standards.
  8. Requisitioning repair parts and welding consumables as required.
  9. Conducting daily inspections of tools and workshop equipment.
  10. Supporting overall fleet maintenance operations across the Christchurch region.

Required Qualifications and Skills

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • NZ Certificate in Welding (Level 4)
  • Experience with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Background in automotive welding or mechanical repair
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • A proactive, safety-focused mindset
  • Class 4 Driver’s Licence (preferred, or willingness to obtain)

  • Pay rate: $40 per hour
