Job Summary
As a Nursery Worker at Bylands Nurseries Ltd., you will be part of a dedicated team responsible for a wide variety of plant care and production activities. The position includes planting, pruning, transplanting, watering, and pest management in an outdoor setting.
This role requires energy, focus, and attention to detail, as you will be involved in maintaining plant health and assisting in the preparation and shipment of plants. You’ll also operate nursery equipment, including tractors, forklifts, and sprayers, under safe working conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Prune trees, shrubs, and plants to maintain their health and shape.
- Mix and prepare soils to create optimal growing conditions.
- Plant bulbs, seeds, and transplants; pot and re-pot plants as needed.
- Assist with grafting activities and transplant rooted cuttings.
- Dig and wrap root balls of trees and shrubs for transport.
- Water and maintain plants, lawns, and gardens according to schedules.
- Label, move, and load plants for distribution.
- Spray trees, shrubs, and flowers to prevent disease and pests.
- Operate nursery equipment such as tractors, loaders, forklifts, and hand tools.
- Maintain cleanliness and order within work areas, ensuring safety standards are met.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- No formal education required, but a secondary school certificate is an advantage.
- Previous experience in horticulture, landscaping, or farming is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Physical fitness to perform outdoor work involving lifting, bending, and walking for long periods.
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, windy, or rainy).
- Strong attention to detail and interest in plant care.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a multicultural team.
- Basic English communication skills required; Spanish knowledge is an asset.
- Safety-conscious and able to follow company policies and procedures.
