Job Overview
As a Welder at Thornton Engineering, you will work as part of a highly skilled team of boilermakers and welders in a structured workshop environment. Reporting directly to the Workshop Supervisor, your role will involve interpreting Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), selecting appropriate consumables, and producing high-quality fabricated steel components. This is a hands-on role that requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety and workmanship.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform welding tasks using MIG (GMAW) processes to a high standard
- Carry out welding using TIG (GTAW), Flux-Core, and Stick (SMAW) methods where required
- Interpret welding procedure specifications (WPS) and fabrication drawings
- Select correct consumables, variables, and techniques for each welding task
- Produce fabricated components in line with quality and project specifications
- Operate and maintain welding machines, power tools, hand tools, and measuring equipment
- Conduct visual inspections to ensure weld quality and compliance
- Work collaboratively with boilermakers, welders, and supervisors
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
- Comply with workplace health and safety procedures at all times
Qualifications and Experience
- Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (Welder) or equivalent
- Ability to pass a welder qualification test
- Considerable experience in MIG (GMAW) welding
- Experience with TIG (GTAW), Flux-Core, and/or Stick (SMAW) welding (advantageous)
- Experience welding stainless steel (advantageous)
- Strong ability to read and interpret WPS and technical drawings
- Skilled in operating fabrication and welding equipment
- Current and valid Australian driver’s licence
- Forklift, Dogman (DG), or other high-risk work licences (highly regarded)
